Open Question: Are internships better than jobs for college students?

Now that the economy is bad it seems that getting an internship would be seem more suitable than trying to look for a job. I am in college and i have no real work experience due to the fact that i have participated in sports all my life and that took up the time that i could have used trying to find a job. Now that i am done with sports, i have been looking for a job. Coupled with the poor economy and my lack of work experience, the search has not been successful. So i thought maybe doing internships would help. What do you all think? Thanks!
